THICKNESS

TT100 Digital Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge

The TT100 is the most popular ultrasonic thickness gauge sold in Australia. It is a low cost, hand-held microprocessor controlled thickness gauge specifically designed for measuring the thickness of metallic and non-metallic materials e.g. aluminium, titanium, plastic, plastics, ceramics, glass and any other good ultrasonic wave-conductor as long as it has parallel top and bottom surfaces.

With uses in many areas of industry, the TT100 can perform precise measurements on various types of raw materials, component parts and assembled machinery.  It can also be used to monitor all types of pipes and pressure vessels for loss of thickness due to corrosion or erosion.

The TT100 is extremely easy to use.  After a simple calibration to a known thickness or sound velocity, the gauge will give accurate readings in millimetres.  Sound velocities for five different materials can be preset and ten thickness readings can be stored in the memory.

The TT100 is supplied complete with  2 x 5 MHz Probes, Gel, Certificate, Instruction Manual and Carrying Case.

Other models are also available.

TD HANDY SCAN

The TD Handy-Scan® is our new hand-held multifunction advanced ultrasonic system. The Handy-Scan was born out of the demand for an inexpensive ultrasonic system that delivers Phased array, ToFD & Pulse echo in a single integrated portable package. The TD Handy-Scan satisfies the growing use of multifunctional UT systems for routine detection and analysis but also fits into more complex inspection procedures with ease. Although the TD Handy-Scan is a small hand-held instrument weighing only 3 kilograms, it sports an impressive battery of features and capability. We have taken our successful approach to designing miniature circuitry to a new level of innovation that will enhance the usability of our ultrasonic systems in the field.

Technicians are often expected to perform inspections using several UT modes and it is now common for inspections to include, for example, both Phased array and ToFD to complement each other. Switching between UT modes is achieved simply by selecting the appropriate mode in the software. The ease of use of the software coupled with micro-miniature electronics, convenient replaceable battery and ultra-compact, lightweight construction brings a new dimension of portable functionality without relinquishing any data quality. The TD Handy-Scan can be used to perform a wide range of code compliant inspections as well as bespoke procedures for special applications including Weld scanning, Corrosion mapping using video tracking, real time defect search and detection using A, B, C, D and Sectorial scan with either ‘snap-shot’ or full data recording – its uses are as wide as the imagination.

NDT Equipment Sales is an authorised distributor in Australia for Cygnus Instruments who manufacture Ultrasonic Metal Thickness Gauges using a technique known as Multiple Echo.  This method was pioneered by Cygnus to overcome the problems associated with measuring through coatings and badly corroded metals.

Coatings up to 6mm thick, whether they are paint, epoxy or bitumen, do not present any problems.  Minimal preparation of the surface is required, saving a considerable amount of both time and money.  Multiple Echo also automatically verifies each measurement before displaying the reading, which means no erroneous measurements are displayed.  This technique is used throughout their range of gauges that have been designed with specific applications in mind.

Other features include no probe zeroing, no re-calibration at switch on and protective membranes fitted to the probe face prevent damage to the probe and keep cost of ownership low.

Only Multiple Echo can give the true substrate thickness and ignore coatings up to 6mm thick.  With Multiple Echo, readings are taken by measuring the time delay between three consecutive back-wall echo’s which means that the coating thickness is completely ignored.  The times of T2 and T3 are equal to the time that it takes to just travel through the metal.  Only by looking at three echoes can the measurements be automatically verified (where T2 = T3).

Multiple echo measurement means:

  • Coatings do not have to be removed – measures only the metal thickness
  • No grinding – minimum surface preparation
  • Measures on rough, uneven surfaces
  • Fast – accurate – reliable
  • No false readings – repeatable results
  • Easy to use – minimum operator training
  • Greatly reduces inspection time and cost
  • Recommended by Classification Societies when measuring through coatings on ships
